SUPER EAGLES

Nigeria's soccer team are fondly known as "The Super Eagles".
In the early fifties and sixties, the team were known as "The Red Devils" while in the eighties they were nicknamed "The Green Eagles".

The team's international exploits in later years will earn them the appellation "Super Eagles".

The present Super Eagles are made up of top class stars who feature in the top leagues in Europe for clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea (England), Inter Milan (Italy), Real Mallorca (Spain), Paris Saint-Germain (France) and Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 (Germany).

 

Below are briefs on the Super Eagles:

  • Featured in three World Cup finals, 1994, 98 & 2002
  • Won the African Nations Cup in 1980 and 1994 and have been beaten finalists in '84, '88, '90 and 2000.
  • Were rated as the 5th best team in the world by FIFA on the eve of the 1994 World Cup
  • Afro-Asian Champions, 1995
  • All-Africa Games Gold medallists, 1973
  • Have produced several African Footballers of the Year including Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba and Nwankwo Kanu (twice).
  • The nucleus of the team made soccer history in 1996 when they became the first African team to win Olympic Soccer Gold at the Atlanta Olympics.
  • The Eagles have reached the second round of the World Cup on the two occasions they have featured at the global championship.
  • Presently ranking 5th position in Africa.
